Calvary Temple's History of the Church
Calvary Temple History

Calvary Temple, United Pentecostal Church, was re-dedicated to the glory of God on the last Saturday of February 1969. This came about through a group of people who came from the island of Jamaica to England, in the late fifties and early sixties. They were believers in the wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ and in the saving power of His name.
A missionary named Reverend Mervyn D. Miller and his family came from the USA and became the Pastor of the group of brethren. There were times when the group had to hold meetings in the front rooms of houses, in basements and rented halls. This was not convenient and hindered the establishment of the full gospel and preaching to the lost and dying.
After many prayers and days of fasting and seeking the Lord, the group heard the building at 1 Councillor Street, known as the Brandon Baptist Church, was redundant and was about to be demolished in order to build homes. The owners of the property and the local authorities were approached. After negotiations the property was purchased by the group of brethren.
The Pastor at that time, Reverend M.D. Miller, was assisted by Reverend L.G. Edwards and Reverend J. Dallas. The Board of Elders were Reverend E.R. Lindo, Reverend F.G. Gallimore, Reverend L.E. Carnegie and Reverend S.G. Sappleton, who is now the pastor.
Several new works were established in the district by the bretheren sent out from Calvary Temple under the supervision of Reverend M.D. Miller, who was also Superintendent for the District.
New churches were established in the district, under the leadership of Reverend S.G. Sappleton who became Pastor of Calvary Temple in 1975. The churches are namely: Islington UPC, Stockwell UPC, Plaistow UPC, Ilford UPC, Roehampton UPC, Lee/Catford UPC and Plumstead UPC. Most of these churches are doing fine. To God be the Glory.
Calvary Temple has also helped other churches in the District to be established.
Calvary Temple has seen hundreds of souls come to the Lord in water baptism and the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
Many have found their spiritual partners and have consented together in marriage and are living for the Lord. Many miracles have been wrought; lives have been changed and delivered from bondage. Many babies have been blessed and not so many of our loved ones have gone to rest.
